Beta-glucan
This super ingredient is part of the sugar family. There are different types of sugars like betaine, or sweeteners like xylitol, sorbitol or beta-glucan. Sugars are often used in skin care because they are ultra-humectant ingredients that help retain moisture in the skin, preventing dehydration. Sugars are also prebiotics that promote the presence of good bacteria on the surface of the skin.
Frequently used in Korean skincare, beta-glucan can be sourced from grains, yeast, fungi, and bacteria. It is often compared to hyaluronic acid, but maintains 20% more hydration than hyaluronic acid. Acting as a super shield, it will strengthen the epidermis' immunity by awakening the activity of immune cells and thus protect the skin from external attacks.
It also accelerates the skin repair process and provides optimal hydration by creating a thin film on its surface to protect it from water loss. It also has stimulating effects on collagen synthesis, which improve the elasticity and firmness of the skin, helping tissues to regenerate and reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
